Thermometers
Not Accepted, Alternative Options Available
CAUTION: Household Hazardous Waste
DO NOT place this item in a City of Omaha curbside recycling cart or drop-off site container. Thermometers can contain mercury, which is considered household hazardous waste and requires special handling.
Thermometers and other mercury-containing devices should be taken to the City's special waste facility, UnderTheSink. UnderTheSink accepts unwanted chemicals and special waste from households in Douglas and Sarpy Counties. A list of acceptable items and more information can be found at:
Tip: If your themometer is digital, or has a red or blue indicator line, it is not considered hazardous and can be placed in the garbage. If your thermometer has a liquid silver tip or silver line, it is likely mercury and would need to be disposed of at UnderTheSink.
